ARC on CBC Radio
3/6/2012
Speaking Notes from session on CBC Radio1 / March 2, 2012

ARC Representative: Graham Murray, President

Listen to the complete session at:
http://www.cbc.ca/edmontonam/episodes/2012/03/02/labour-shortages-expected/

Issue:  Current Challenges in Alberta Labor Market
  • Not enough qualified IT resources to meet market demands
  • ARC has opportunities for 40 IT resources in Edmonton today
  • Problem is getting worse
  • Heavy growth started in 2006 and with a break in 2010 due to impacts from the world economic downturn, growth restarted in 2011 and hasn’t stopped…
  • Creates inflationary conditions – driving up costs
  • Driving customers to consider alternatives to satisfy their IT needs – such as off-shoring
  • Off-shoring – projects being worked on and delivered by non-Canadians in other countries.
  • Off-shoring is an option that companies are considering because of the lack of and the high cost of locally qualified candidates
  • Dollars being spent outside of Canada delivering solutions for Canadian companies
  • A customer told me the reason they off-shored was that they felt they could not staff a 100 person IT team locally.  They were likely right.
  • However – if we don’t solve this problem – more work will go off-shore
  • Downside – will ultimately see the death of the IT sector; just like the manufacturing sector in NA – where most manufacturing is now done in China
  • You are already seeing a declining trend in Canada with students are not  going into IT
Thoughts on the creation of the new coalition
  • I think this is a great, when I read it in the paper yesterday I was very pleased.
  • I am looking into getting connected into this group to see where our company can assist.
  • It also highlighted to ARC that this problem is bigger than just the IT sector.  600,000 new jobs in the next 10 years scare me.
  • This will be a huge challenge for this Province.
  • The Province and the Feds need to get focused on this.
What are you looking to see the government do?
  • We need to make it easier to get skilled resources into this country.
  • Right now it takes 3-4-5 months to get a resource into this country, this is too long.
  • The current process requires companies to do a labor market opinion which requires companies to prove that there is really a need and that we have done enough due diligence searching locally and prove it to the feds.  We need to do an LMO (Labor Market Opinion) for each role
  • Governments need to acknowledge there is a wide spread resourcing shortfall in these industries and allow companies to bring in qualified resources through a streamlined process
  • If we don’t, companies will have no choice but to go off shore to satisfy their needs.
  • Then the IT sector will see the same fate as the NA manufacturing sector.
  • Our company is fundamentally opposed to off-shoring as it runs counter to what this country, our company (and most other companies) are trying to accomplish – which is to grow and contribute to this nation.

Since the activation of ARC’s green policy, the organization has been successful on a number of dimensions.  This commitment has been applied throughout ARC’s three offices as further described here.

ARC’s Edmonton office is run by the Manulife Place operations group. Manulife has a long-standing commitment to the environment, and have adopted a formal environmental policy since 1995. Manulife strives to achieve the highest standards of environmental responsibility by establishing and maintaining a broad range of procedures that ensures sensitivity to the environment. Specifically, Manulife emphasizes energy conservation, sustainability, environmental risk management, recycling and healthy work environments. Governance and oversight of these programmes are done both by internal management systems and third-party industry audits and certifications. The policy is supported by comprehensive procedures and risk management practices. From a corporate oversight viewpoint, Manulife’s environmental policy and the related procedures are administered under the oversight of the Chief Environmental Officer, and an environmental review is presented annually to the Board of Directors. Practical examples within the building include active recycling of waste (cardboard, cans, bottles, paper/newspaper, etc.), and automated lights shutdown, rampup of air conditioning in peak periods (with shutdowns in non-peak periods).

Our Calgary office is located in Bow Valley Square run by Oxford Properties.  The Oxford Properties Group‘s policy states it is committed to a 20% reduction in emissions by 2012 across their company’s entire office portfolio.  They have upgraded the lights within the building to higher efficiency as well as started light sweeps and shutting down of escalators earlier. They have an ongoing recycling program throughout the building and are implementing a capital project that will help lower emissions.

Our Toronto office is run by Avison Young.  Avison Young has implemented an “Environmental Management Plan” within their building in order to improve and enhance the environment.  Avison Young places great effort into recycling and is Bill 143 compliant.  Information displays are set up in the lobby during Earth Week and Waste Reduction Week.  Recycling reminders and changes are delivered to tenants via email.  Lighting is controlled by an electronic timer control system to automatically shut off lights within the tenanted areas at 10:00 pm.

In addition to the overall building programs, individual ARC offices have also implemented various recycling practices and projects.  In terms of daily practice, ARC provides recycling bins for paper located in common areas next to printers and fax machines.  In connection, employees are encouraged to carefully decide whether to print documents rather than view them on their computers. In the event printing is necessary, then double sided printing has been actively encouraged. ARC’s printer hardware acquisitions require that the device can print double-sided – default settings for network printing are set to double-sided/black and white. Color printing is only done when necessary and therefore preserves toner usage and reduces the need to recycle/recondition these cartridges. ARC also provides recycling bins for bottles, plastics and aluminums.  These are located within kitchen areas and are collected by building operations personnel.

ARC offices, from time to time, also engage specific project work to address an environmental issue. Historical examples of these include:

·         Server Consolidation Project – ARC’s corporate data centre went through a complete overhaul with the key objectives being the:

o   decommissioning of an air conditioning unit that had a high degree of water consumption

o   reduction of the heat footprint through the replacement of old servers

o   reduction of power usage through the replacement of old servers

·         Hardware Recycling – old hardware is taken to facilities where they can be reconditioned or recycled

·         Donation of Hardware – ARC has donated hardware, no longer in active use in the company, to such recipients as schools or employees for home use

ARC 10 Year Anniversary

ARC 10 Year Anniversary: Building Relationships Since 1998

Edmonton, Alberta — July 4, 2008 — ARC Business Solutions Inc. (ARC) was conceived in Edmonton and formally launched as an Alberta-based firm in the spring of 1998. At its inception there were five staff members. ARC is now marking its Tenth Anniversary by thanking its customers and all the members of its team over the years. Graham Murray, ARC President, reflected by saying: “The relationships with our customers and staff are central to ARC’s success. This success is a product of collective and collaborative efforts from clients and every member of the ARC team. Building and sustaining these relationships is how we will continue to demonstrate and deliver ‘business technology value’ to our customers.”

ARC’s early consulting assignments were mainly in the electricity market as Alberta prepared for deregulation in the late 1990s. Other areas of work involved Y2K counsel and custom software development, including the creation of software products such as: ARC PowerSuite, LASER, ARCPower, and ARC DataSentinel – primarily using Oracle technologies. As work evolved and expanded over the years, ARC has also changed and adapted. Murray recalls: “I remember our first monthly staff meetings being 5 or 6 people sitting around the table in a very informal way; we continue to meet on a monthly basis in all our regions and present a structured and informative forum for ARC’s team. In some of our meetings, it’s standing room only. We value the relationships built with our staff and feel this is an important and effective mechanism toward this goal. I think this open and frequent communication is integral to our continued success.” “Another dimension to our successful relationships has been our ability to deliver value added services to our clients - provisioning extra training, mentoring, workshops, management advisory support, regulatory consulting, assistance with developing presentations, and strategic technology/management/policy consulting.”

ARC has now grown to be arguably the largest Information Technology (IT) consulting company with its head office in Edmonton – now approaching 100 people across a wide spectrum of industry sector work and skill sets: project/program managers, management consultants, business analysts, solution architects, programmers, developers/analysts, testers, database administrators, along with a variety of other technology-based abilities. The company continues to thrive as a customer-focused company with a strong internal corporate culture founded in key principles such as annual customer appreciation events, creative and fun social functions, along with educational support programs, employee profit sharing and an employee ownership program. ARC has also matured its corporate communications by hosting its own website (www.arcbus.com), and publishes a quarterly employee newsletter and regular news releases all toward formalizing methods and messages to key stakeholder audiences.

ARC operates out of 3 regions – Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto - and services a broad base of private and public sector clients distributed across North America. Service delivery is focused in three main verticals: Professional Services (software development lifecycle, management consulting, etc.), Enterprise Content Management (document and records management solutions), and Managed Services (IT ‘service desk’ assistance to small and medium sized businesses; Microsoft Certified Infrastructure). Toward providing effective business solutions for customers, ARC has positioned itself as a reseller/certified partner with a variety of software companies, and has applied experience in core technologies such as: Oracle, Java, .NET, and content management specialization in Captiva, Documentum, FileNet, SharePoint, and Imagitek.

“ARC is excited about the future”, Murray states, “we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, learned from our experiences, and are prepared to keep on delivering and expanding on our sound technology solutions for our customers across North America.”

Acronym Delight: ARC Speaks to CIOs at CIPS
3/7/2008

An excerpt of an article by Tom Keenan - Business Edge
Published: February 22, 2008 - Vol. 8, No. 4

ARC’s Steve Parent, a Calgary-based Enterprise Content Management (ECM) professional, recently presented to an audience of chief information officers in Calgary to talk about enterprise content management (ECM). Parent's session, sponsored by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS), drew a full house of corporate types around the breakfast table at the Petroleum Club.

Parent says that ECM systems are for 'unstructured data,' which he defines as anything that's not in a relational database. Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, videos, large maps, web pages, all of the rich media content. Parent quoted comedian George Carlin: 'That's all your house is: A place to keep your stuff. If you didn't have so much stuff, you wouldn't need a house. You could just walk around all the time.' ECM is for people with a lot of stuff. Oil and gas companies, for instance, are flying over environmental sites and taking video - that's unstructured content, he says. All of these can be stored, filed and managed in an ECM system.

Most in attendance said they were already using at least one ECM system, or in the process of implementing one. Some complained that they had more than one in their company, which is a problem in itself.

Should you save everything? 'Absolutely not,' says Parent. He says the trick is to decide what needs to be stored. 'Ask your employees to assist you,' he advises. 'They know what is worthy of storage, what needs to be tracked and kept, ARC helps businesses do just that.

Parent cites examples like 'a major oil and gas company' that brought in ARC Business Solutions because, after one year, their ECM system had low user acceptance. It was only being used by one small department.

The problem, Parent says, was that management used the 'big stick' method - announcing that the technology was being deployed to organize and protect the company's intellectual property.

Far better, he suggests, to use the 'carrot' approach of asking employees how ECM might help them do their jobs better. He also advocates having users ask to have spiffy new ECM features implemented, rather than pushing them down their throats.

He also addresses what he calls the 'SharePoint Conundrum' which is bedevilling many companies.

Microsoft is pushing this product hard, and according to Parent, it does offer ECM and it's getting better? It integrates seamlessly into Microsoft's other products.

Still, it's not a heavy-hitter ECM package like Documentum and the result can be open warfare. In his presentation, Parent quotes the CIO of a medium-sized oil and gas company as saying: 'There seem to be two camps in this company. The IT guys want SharePoint, and the records, legal and regulatory people want Documentum. And I'm stuck in the middle and I have no idea what to do. The records manager says he/she will resign if we implement SharePoint!' Parent notes that the records manager did indeed quit over this issue.

It didn't have to end that way.

Instead, companies should integrate SharePoint with their other ECM approaches. After all, once the data is spinning around out there, you can look at it through different windows. Parent says people overestimate the work involved in doing this, since 'integration is getting a lot easier.' Moral: There's often more than one way to skin an information cat.

ARC wins Channel Elite Enterprise Solution Award
11/20/2007

Edmonton, Alberta — November 20, 2007 ARC Business Solutions Inc. (ARC), today announced its receipt of the top award for its enterprise solution implemented at the Bank of Montreal (BMO) InvestorLine. The 2007 Channel Elite Gold Award in the Enterprise Solution category honors the solution provider that has created the most innovative and advanced technology solution for an enterprise. ARC’s work assisted BMO InvestorLine to successfully automate and accelerate the approval process for its online investors - significantly cut its document processing costs.

ARC’s President, Graham Murray commented that: “ARC appreciates the opportunity to receive this kind of public recognition, and must credit the perseverance and creativity of our people in helping our customers improve operational efficiencies, reduce costs, better service their customers – essentially aiding them in delivery of value to their customers. It is very important to us to ensure our customers’ business success with their technology solutions.”

ARC used EMC Captiva’s InputAccel, a customizable document capture solution, to create a system that uses advanced capture software technology to process web forms, along with paper and web applications. BMO InvestorLine required the solution to reduce high volumes of paper across multiple locations and quickly, accurately and securely process confidential customer information for online trading account applications. One of the most beneficial aspects of the solution is the ability to automatically trigger an event to approve a customer for trading. This has significantly reduced the manual labor historically involved with the approval process. Customer satisfaction has greatly improved as the time for approval of trading accounts has been significantly reduced. This benefit resulted primarily from automated functionality replacing human intervention in the front-end capture process where paper is converted to digital images.

Under the new model, customers visit the BMO InvestorLine web site and fill out their online application. Once completed, the customer electronically submits this form. An account is subsequently created in the primary business system, and a unique barcode is generated. During this same web session, the barcode appears on the customer’s application. The customer prints their online application, signs it and sends it to BMO InvestorLine. This physical signature is required to comply with Canadian legislation regarding online trading. When the signed application form is received, it is scanned and the barcode is automatically detected and matched with the data resident in the primary business system. The document is then automatically indexed and stored in a back-end document management system. This also triggers an automatic workflow event to approve the customer for trading. The system process also keeps a detailed audit trail of all activities related to a batch of documents.

Key business benefits and derived value were:

  • Accelerated processing of customers’ applications resulting in better customer satisfaction and response times.
  • Enhanced quality control measures and security around processing confidential customer information.
  • Alignment with key legislation resulting in the ability to destroy paper, thus significantly reducing storage costs of paper. In connection, sound business processes/practices provided the necessary credibility/integrity for the image to function as the original record for evidentiary purposes.
  • Centralized operations provided for a reduced number of operational centres and personnel resulting in decreased overall costs.
  • Enhanced accuracy of overall application process demonstrating a reduction of misplaced documents and/or incorrectly filed documents.

The Annual Channel Elite Awards are managed by the Computer Dealer News, an IT channel publication recognizing individuals and companies for their creativity and success at delivery of technology solutions. The Channel Elite Awards has been rewarding solution providers since 2002, and awards prizes in seven unique categories to channel partners who deliver innovative and problem solving solutions during the past 12-month period. Solutions must have been completed by December of 2006.

ARC Implements RSS Feeds on Website

August 29, 2007 - With a view to leveraging current technologies to aid visitors to www.arcbus.com, ARC has implemented RSS XML feeds on its website pages. Of particular note are the RSS feeds available for News, and Employment Listings. Customers are encouraged to subscribe to keep up to date on emergent news items, while job-seekers are able to effortlessly monitor the changing landscape of career opportunities at ARC.

RSS 2.0 (which, in its most recent format, stands for 'Really Simple Syndication') is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as news headlines. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites (pages) in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually. An RSS document, which is called a 'feed', contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats.

RSS content can be read using software called a 'feed reader' or an 'aggregator.' The aggregator provides a consolidated view of the content in a single browser display or desktop application. Such applications are also referred to as RSS readers, feed readers, feed aggregators, news readers or search aggregators.

The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds. Aggregators reduce the time and effort needed to regularly check websites for updates, creating a unique information space or 'personal newspaper.' Once subscribed to a feed, an aggregator is able to check for new content at user-determined intervals and retrieve the update. The content is sometimes described as being 'pulled' to the subscriber, as opposed to 'pushed' with email or Instant Messaging (IM). Unlike recipients of some 'pushed' information, the aggregator user can easily unsubscribe from a feed. Aggregator features are frequently built into portal sites (such as My Yahoo! and iGoogle), modern Web browsers and e-mail programs.

Managed services

Risk Management Services for Small & Medium Sized Businesses

Edmonton, Alberta — May 5, 2007 ARC Business Solutions Inc. (ARC), today announced its active launch of Managed Services.

Managed Services is a monthly service, founded on industry best-practices, that provides real-time monitoring of networks and connected devices. Graham Murray, President of ARC, commented on some of the challenges facing smaller organizations: “In-house IT teams face challenges of being experts across many diverse technology sets, along with day-to-day issue management and customer service obligations that obstruct forward-looking strategic technology planning for the organization. Smaller companies often only have one or two individuals who must handle day to day issues, while also laying plans for the future. This presents acute risks to smaller and mid-sized firms.”

In order to address this issue of risk, ARC has formulated a strategy that is affordable, predictable and sound. The technology behind network monitoring is complex and historically only practically available to large companies. Now, costs have declined, and after recognizing the value this solution offers to all sizes of organizations, ARC invested in leading-edge software and infrastructure to support its customers. ARC is now able to offer this service to small and medium sized companies at a reasonable and predictable cost. Effectively, Managed Services affords the following benefits:

·         Continuous, real-time network monitoring

·         Affordable and predictable monthly costs

·         Maximize stability and availability of your network

·         Reduces risk of outages and network failures

·         Prevents day-to-day hassles before they occur

·         Enables proactive strategic planning for your business

ARC Business Solutions Inc. is an established, growing and customer-oriented information technology solution provider with proven abilities to incorporate strategy, creativity and technical aspects into business solutions. Emergent Issues in Information Systems Security
Edmonton, Alberta
2/16/2006
Oracle and ARC Business Solutions Inc. (ARC) delivered a conference on February 15, 2006 to government and private sector clients interested in security issues as they relate to information systems. A mix of business and technical practitioners were in attendance seeking information on the current state of legislation such as: Sarbanes Oxley, PIPEDA, FOIPP, Bill C-198 / MI 52-111, and other US International requirements.

ARC’s Tim McCreight, a certified security professional, discussed emergent issues and a new reality that confronts organizations who are required to demonstrate stringent internal controls and high levels of protection of data they are storing and handling. The security triad of confidentiality, integrity and availability underscored Mr. McCreights presentation.

Oracle’s John Egan, a long-time security practitioner from the United States, brought a big picture view to audit and compliance requirements, and the potential negative material consequences to firms who violate these rules. Mr. Egan presented present-day cases in point showing multi-million dollar fines and jail terms for organizations that were not actively following best-practices such as COBIT and ISO. He went on to talk about the Oracle toolset and its inherent abilities to enforce security standards, and provide a high degree of inter-operability and automation, ultimately equipping companies with a defense in depth strategy around their data. Firms that demonstrate this kind of security not only reduce their risk of loss/theft of data, but in the event of a security breach, they reduce the risk of heavy fines because of security policies and practices that are actively in place. The final presentation provided an applied example of Oracles security abilities. This part showed how existing Oracle functionality is leveraged for auditing and file-integrity purposes.

Eric Janzen, ARC’s Product Architect, talked about customizing Oracle functionality such as fine-grained auditing, data definition, session auditing, and ensuring file integrity using an MD5 check algorithm. Mr. Janzen spoke about the powerful abilities of the Oracle toolset to ensure all database operations are tracked, and that an organization can customize any Oracle application to track this information in a fully secure manner that is separate from production information and data.

ARCPower billing solution short listed by ENMAX Power Corporation
Calgary, Alberta
10/20/2004
ARC Business Solutions (ARC) is pleased to announce that their ARCPower software has been short listed by ENMAX Power Corporation (EPC) for their Distribution and Tariff billing solution. In addition to ARC, SAP AG of Walldorf, Germany has also been included for further consideration in the evaluation process.

EPC is a large Alberta-based utilities company. As a major player in the regulated power transmission and distribution system, EPC requires a wholesale billing solution to conform to new cycle based billing regulatory requirements and produce bill ready data for power retailers. EPC requires a solution to address the billing requirements of over 500,000 sites, including over 25,000 interval metered sites. In addition, the solution must support production of both on-cycle and off-cycle bills, be scalable, support increased customer service, and create efficiencies in the areas of exception management and reporting.

Due to its elevated market standing and knowledge of the subject matter, ARC was one of a handful companies to which EPC directed its Request for Proposal. “To be selected for the next stage of this process is recognition of ARC’s proven expertise in the power industry which is reflected in the design and functionality of the ARCPower product”, said Graham Murray, President of ARC. He added, “To be considered alongside the world’s largest inter-enterprise software company is truly a testament to our company, its people, and products.”

ARC announces an ARCPower Solution for SaskPower Corporation
Edmonton, Alberta
1/12/2004
ARC Business Solutions Inc. (ARC), today announced a successful implementation of ARCPower LASER for SaskPower Corporation of Regina, Saskatchewan. LASER (Load Allocation / Settlement Engine and Repository) is a web-based software component of ARC’s ARCPower product line for electric utilities. The turnkey solution provides a mechanism to allocate energy to every site/customer, down to the hour, and balance energy generation against consumption for every hour. This solution provides an essential accounting function for energy that tracks the entire load within a zone for electric utilities said Graham Murray, President, ARC.

Mr. Murray further explains that: Conceptually, if you think of a spreadsheet with sites going vertically down the first column and hours going horizontally across the top, every cell in the spreadsheet will be allocated energy. Some based upon profiling techniques, others based upon actual energy if they have interval meters, and others based upon a deemed load shape where no meter exists (e.g., streetlights, phone booths). At the bottom of every column is an energy total that represents the load consumed at the point-of-delivery (POD) for the hour. The sum of the energy for all sites in each hour should match the POD total. If not, then the unaccounted-for-energy (UFE) cell will have a value. A small UFE value indicates an accurate energy allocation (or accounting) process. A large UFE means there is more work to be done to account for all the energy consumed.

The solution provides SaskPower with a centralized data repository containing energy utilization, load patterns and segmentation for over 450,000 customers. A powerful web-based reporting interface gives immediate access to key information for business groups such as Sales, Marketing, Pricing, Forecasting and System Planning. In the future, customers will have direct access to their own data. A customer’s web browser and proper security authorization to the system will facilitate timely business decisions to save money based upon their site(s) recent consumption patterns. The solution also provides the foundation for a de-regulated market structure in the event Saskatchewan chooses to open up the market for competition. In the meantime, all departments within SaskPower are able to use this data as a one-stop-shop for energy consumption information and provides time to refine energy accounting functions such as reconciliation and audit. This project launches a multi-phase business architecture initiative jointly developed by SaskPower, EPCOR Distribution Inc., and ARC.
